What We Do

What we do

Roots Urban Farm in Madison, TN began in 2015 to steward a vacant lot owned by the church into a permaculture paradise that could be a place to practice hospitality and generosity with our neighbors and to educate and inspire others to do the same in their neighborhoods.

Demonstration Farm

Our urban farm sits on less than half an acre of land and grows a large variety of annual and perennial fruits and vegetables

Icon
Education & Workshops

One way we want to educate our community and distribute more food is to build barrel gardens together and send everyone home with a barrel garden if they want one.

Icon
Garden Consulting

We want to help more people, churches, and organizations establish gardens and grow their own food.

Who Do We Help

Garden Saturdays

May through October, every Saturday from nine to noon we pick, wash, weigh, and stage the garden produce for use thoughout the week.

Demonstration Farm

Our approach to gardening is “permaculture meets market gardening”. We grow in the ground, in raised beds, and in aquaponic systems.

Wood Fired Pizza Oven

We want to build a rock-and-cob wood-fired pizza oven from the stones we’ve found in the garden—turning toil into table, and harvests into community.

A solar dehydrator is a sustainable, low-tech solution for preserving fruits, vegetables, herbs, and more—using only the power of the sun.

High Tunnel Climate Battery

We installed a climate battery under the ground in the high tunnel to store daytime heat in the ground and keep our plants warmer on winter nights.
